The Maserati GranTurismo range definitely consists of good looking cars, pleasing to the eye and swoon worthy. People all over the world have saved pictures of these dynamic cars as their desktop / screensaver and spend hours browsing the videos of the various models on offer. So what’s under the hood and is it all just eye candy or does it really have the power to make heads turn?
62 years ago the Maserati dream to have a normal on the road car fitted with a racing engine was born. Their first offering was the famous A6 1500 GT Pininfarina in 1947 which took the world by storm. The car was constructed as a very safe, though thrilling ride. Since then Maserati has won more than 30 international Best Car awards. Their unique styling and their attention to detail ensures that every model is excellent in technology and hand-crafted quality.
The Maserati GranTurismo is inspired by the Maserati Birdcage 75th concept car. According to Maserati it has a presence of unrivaled physicality and drama with an exterior that appears muscular, with a natural fluidity that starts at the front grille and extends all the way along the sides to the tail lights. This design is special and makes the car aerodynamically efficient. The wind tunnel which completes the design was one of the most important details in the development of this Maserati masterpiece.
The Maserati GranTurismo is a pioneer in the modern, two door four seater coupe and combines luxurious interiors with an eight cylinder 4,244 cc V90 engine which is used in most of Maserati’s later cars. The cars are made to measure and each customer can configure their own model as per their tastes. The company boasts eight million possible interior combinations with leather color, stitching, carpet color, wood finishes and lacquer finishes.
The car has a maximum RPM of 7100 at maximum power of 405 bhp and has a max engine speed of 7250 rpm. The top speed is 178 mph and can go from 0-60 mph in just 5.2 seconds.
The Maserati GranTurismo S, is the sportiest version of Maserati’s coupé and is meant to cater to those who require a high performance car set apart from the rest. The engine is the same as the original GranTurismo but the transaxle used when designing the engine and gearbox distinguishes it. The suspension is improved with new fixed-rate dampers which improve damping 10%. The Brembo brakes and the compression and extension ratios make it a better sports car and the design includes red prongs on the Trident and the Saetta logo mirror.
The Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic adds to driving pleasure with the already powerful and comfortable interiors. This is the most advanced option with a six speed automatic gearbox that allows smooth driving. The car has an increased torque which is mostly felt at low-mid range and this is the true essence of the car along with its gearbox. The Brembo brakes have six calipers fitted on the front and works even better because of dual-cast discs, a set up where cast iron and aluminum unite to deliver consistent performance even at high working temperatures. The Skyhook damping system adjusts automatically according to the road condition
